Update of Ballast Water Management System Convention (BWMC) 2004
The Ballast Water Management System Convention has been updated to better prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms through ballast water discharge. This update includes new guidelines and regulations that improve the effectiveness of ballast water management systems on ships. These updates address issues such as treatment, discharge, monitoring, reporting, and approval of ballast water treatment systems. One major change is the stricter standards for treating ballast water, requiring ships to use approved systems to meet the required concentration levels for harmful organisms. Additionally, the Storage of treated sewage (effluent) and/or grey water in ballast tanks has been described.
