Changes to the POLAR CODE as of January 2026
Resolution MSC.538(107), which incorporates amendments to the Polar Code that have come into force as of 1 January 2026, extends mandatory safety requirements to non-SOLAS vessels in polar waters, including fishing vessels ≥ 24 m, pleasure yachts ≥ 300 GT, and cargo vessels of 300-500 GT. The resolution introduces new Chapters 9-1 (Safety of navigation) and 11-1 (Voyage planning) to improve operational safety and requires stricter ice detection and navigation equipment for these vessels.
