First students with Dutch CoC Electrical Engineering Officer (ETO)

The first Maritime Officer students with an Electrical Engineering Officer (ETO) Certificate of Competence graduated last September. The Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz on Terschelling is the first training institute in the Netherlands to offer this specialization.

Electrical engineering already played a major role in the technical specialization of the existing university (HBO) training for Maritime Officers, but in order to obtain this qualification, students took a specialized course for six months, followed by a number of extra assignments and tasks during the second internship on board. The diploma enables the student to obtain the CoC ‘Electro Technical Officer all ships’, next to ‘Engineering officer of the watch all ships’. This is a big step for maritime education. Knowledge and expertise in the field of electrical engineering, electronics and automation are increasingly important on board modern ships.
