Handling of expired medicines on board according to MARPOL
Within the framework of international environmental regulations for shipping, as laid down in the MARPOL Convention, specific guidelines apply to the management of waste on board ships. According to Directive MEPC.1/Circ.834/Rev.1, in the section “Minimization and management of ship-generated wastes/residues” (paragraph 27), the supplier or manufacturer of medicinal products must be able to provide facilities for the processing or disposal of expired medicinal products.
This means that ships are not themselves responsible for the final destruction of such medication, but that use must be made of suitable facilities provided by the supplier or manufacturer. This regulation aims to prevent pharmaceutical substances from entering the marine environment and thereby causing damage to the ecosystem.
