New SOLAS requirements for towing and mooring equipment

New inspection, maintenance and procedural requirements for all ships under SOLAS are published in Regulation II-1/3-8, which comes into force on 1 January 2024.

Shipowners should establish the following onboard procedures:

– Procedures for mooring operations, including inspection and maintenance of mooring equipment.

– Procedures to enable the identification and control of mooring lines and associated attachments.

– Periodic inspection of mooring equipment and associated attachments as part of the onboard maintenance plan or equivalent planned maintenance system.

While most of the above is normally already covered by the onboard safety management system, it is strongly recommended that companies review their procedures, records and forms to ensure the above points have been properly addressed.

Extensive information can be found on the IMO website explaining how to implement the new legislation plus lots of advice on safe mooring procedures.
