According to the Alternative Fuels Insight platform, there are more than 800 battery ships in use, a figure that has more than tripled in the past five years. Of these, 60% are active in Europe, and on-board batteries are used for propulsion, either purely electric or for hybrid functions. At least 50% are hybrid or plug-in hybrid, and about 13% are purely electric.<\/p>\n<p>The current low energy density of available energy storage systems causes a preferred option for short trips or services that require little autonomy.
